I dont know if it just me or where I live. But I have noticed that when I jump in my car for my daily commute from my home in Brighton to My office in Surrey, I have a little passenger namely the Wing Mirror Spider. Now I don't know if it's the modern design of cars that attacts them, or that its specific to certain cars but one things for sure they have found a space to make their own. On my car I have electric door mirrors that have a free floating bit of glass, that I can adjust via a button inside the car, whilst the hard outer casing of the mirror stays stationary. This makes and ideal little cubby hole/cave/dwelling for now infamous Wing Mirror Spider.
What really astonishes me is his dedication, I don't use my car all the time but in the time that it is parked, he manages to make a variety of elaborate design's. From pattern's that span across the mirror glass, to ones that reach from mirror casing to door and bridge the gap between and open to the flow of air as that surges through as I race daily down the motorway.
Now some days I'm a benevolent sort of chap and allow his web to stay, but some days I think it makes the car look a little dirty and brush his masterpiece away, on occassion and as way of a confession here, I sadistically rotate the glass using the electic adjustment feature to break the thin threads, as I sit remote and distant from behind smoked glass causing distruction caccooned in my leather and walnut evil lare and cause him another, busy weekend of constuction!
What I have to admire is his diligence determination and steadfastness. Despite my best efforts he returns with the dependability of a swiss timepiece.
As a way of an aside, his or hers (being pc here) webs are very strong, certainly capable of standing the national speed limit and even beyond on the odd occassion! But what now I am starting to notice, is that he is not alone, having had just one Wing Mirror Spider on the drivers side, I now find that I have a pair dwelling in both my mirrors leaving me to conclude that not only he is possibly a she, but moreover, the Wing Mirror Spider is not just getting by but triving.
Are they secretly petrol heads ? Do the enjoy the speed? Are they just nomadic and enjoying the travel and simply have gypsy souls? Who knows? I'm sure there must be a expert who could tell me? But maybe it's a hygene issue I hear your cry ? not so, I use a car wash regularly and whilst it might clear away any remnants of web, it really make little effect on the spiders and sure enough after a weekend of myself relaxing, come Monday Morning, their they are, with their little silk hammocks hanging there like a peace protesters banners showing me there still very much here and very much up for the 70mph dash to Surrey.
It seems this little stowaway is here to stay, I've notice on the odd occassion that I have walked that there seems a few other cars sporting this latest car accessory, a little bit of organic styling and so I know Im not alone. I just wonder how wide spead this actually is and if they have a prefered type of car ?! Are the webs of a Wing Mirror Spider on a Porsche a little more arodynamic than say a Nissan or better designed on a BWM than that of a Kia?
I'm not sure the spider is as vain as us or as brand motivated either and probably has much deeper things to enlighten us with too.
I know as time goes on I feel increasingly more happy he's on board, like a in car mascot, I've not quite at the leaving dead flys or fruit out stage, but I drive a little bit slower these days to save some fuel and be a bit greener and secretly give him more chance to catching a juicy bug. Maybe the Wing Mirrors Spider is here to teach us something, that life in the fast lane maybe be good, but life in the middle lane can be just as good and if you look just maybe that bit richer too !
Please send me a few of your pics I'd love to see them .
